Job Title: Volunteer Development Manager – Young People

Purpose of the job: To deliver the Time to Change Project, supporting and encouraging voluntary organisations across Surrey to engage with and recruit young people (aged 19 – 25 years) to volunteer.

Salary: £28,000 – 32,000 (subject to experience)

Contract Length: This is initially a one year fixed-term contract, however the possibility of an extension is likely.

Hours: Full-time (36 hours), although 28 hours may be considered for the right candidate.

Location of role: This is a county wide role and so reasonable travel within Surrey will be required. Role preferably based in our Staines Office, but could be based in any of our three office (Camberley, Chertsey or Staines).

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer at VSNS for employment and HR requirements. The post holder will also report into a Project Steering Group, made up of representatives from across Surrey, who will oversee the general direction of the project and review progress and outputs.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To build relationships with voluntary organisations in each Surrey Borough, to encourage and support these organisations to recruit young volunteers aged 19-25.
  • To identify a range of volunteer opportunities that are suitable for young people, both online and in person across the Surrey area.
  • To work with voluntary organisations to identify and develop effective ways to promote volunteering to young people.
  • To carry out regular data analysis of Surrey volunteer databases, monitoring volunteering trends relevant to young volunteers and making recommendations on future directions.
  • To design and deliver training for voluntary organisations to guide them on recruiting and managing young volunteers, giving best practice examples.
  • Manage a team of Volunteering Ambassadors who will help to guide the direction of the project.
  • Produce a monthly newsletter for voluntary organisations to include valuable insight from the Ambassador team and guidance around recruiting young volunteers.
  • Host quarterly online forums for voluntary organisations across Surrey to come together to discuss successes and challenges of recruiting young volunteers.
  • Provide monthly reports to the steering group around the progress towards project objectives.
  • To undertake any other duties as required for the smooth running of the project.


  • Experience working or volunteering with young people
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse range of people and the confidence to communicate at various levels
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Passionate about the local community
  • Good IT skills (to include Microsoft Office)
  • Proficient in written and spoken English
  • Current driving license with access to a car for travel around the county


  • Educated to degree level
  • Awareness of the voluntary sector within Surrey
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience of delivering training and presentations to various audiences
  • Ability to analyse numerical data
  • Experience of volunteering
  • Knowledge of safeguarding


  • 6% pension contribution
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays and an additional three days is given between Christmas and New Year.
