The Resettlement team at Woking Borough Council is looking for a number of committed individuals in the Woking area to assist with the integration of refugee families in Woking.

The main requirements for a volunteer will be to supporting individuals in becoming familiar with the Woking area. Volunteers will help by encouraging refugees to get involved with the local community, how to use public transport to get to and from appointments, offer interpreting assistance if needed all the while developing their skills in day-to-day English.

The ability to drive would be advantageous to this role but definitely not essential. If you would be happy to use public transport to support the refugee in learning the bus routes to the shops, doctors and hospitals.

Moving to the UK has been a huge adjustment for the refugees and as such, they have faced a number of challenges settling into Woking. Volunteer support will help refugees to do things for themselves, to become more independent and to integrate into the community.

Applicants should be willing to undergo a DBS check and basic safeguarding and cultural awareness training before carrying out this role.

In return, the Refugee Support team at the council will offer support where needed and be a point of contact for volunteers. Expenses incurred during volunteering will be paid by the Council.

What skills do I need?

Arabic, Farsi (Dari) Pashto and Ukrainian speaking would be an advantage but not essential.

To be the friendly and confident

In return, we will offer support where needed and be a point of contact for volunteers. Expenses incurred during volunteering will be paid by the Council.
