For The Oaktree and The Hermitage Schools
The Oaktree School are always looking to improve and support our children's reading skills and this is where you can help. Volunteers are required to hear children read across the infant primary age range ( 4 – 7 years old) to provide that very important reading practice. You will work with the children on a regular basis for a morning or afternoon session and hours will be flexible to suit.
Listening to children read their reading book, supporting
them with words they do not know and encouraging them to sound out unfamiliar
words. Discussing the story, predicting
what will happen next and discussing the content, characters, authors choice of
language etc… This activity takes place with one child at a time and often with
school children who do not get much opportunity to read at home or need extra
support to enable them to make expected progress.
Volunteers will need basic literacy skills and the will enjoy reading and working with children. Experience of working with children will be beneficial. Volunteers will need to be reliable as they will be working with specific children regularly. Patience and good listening support this position.
