About The People's Theatre Company

The PTC is a small, well-established charity with a creative and community focus. We are VAT registered, with an annual turnover currently between £70k and £100k, and we pride ourselves on being well run, respectful, and realistic about volunteers’ time.

We are seeking an experienced volunteer Bookkeeper / Accountant to take on a key role supporting the charity’s financial health and governance.

About the role

This is an important but manageable role, with clear systems already in place and a supportive handover from our current volunteer.

The role is suitable for someone who is comfortable working independently and enjoys applying their financial skills in a purposeful, low-pressure charity environment.

Key responsibilities

•Processing routine transactions using Sage

•Bank reconciliations and maintaining accurate financial records

•Preparing and submitting VAT returns

•Supporting basic budgeting, spreadsheets and financial planning

•Assisting with annual accounts in line with Charity SORP

•Liaising with trustees and, where needed, external accountants or examiners

•Supporting a smooth transition and handover

What we offer

•A genuinely valued role where your contribution really matters

•Full flexibility - the role can be carried out entirely remotely

•A calm, respectful working relationship with trustees

•Expenses reimbursed

•Free tickets to PTC shows and events

•The opportunity to remain involved longer-term, if that appeals to you

What skills do I need?

We are looking for someone who can confidently “do the job”, rather than meet a specific formal qualification. You might be:

•Qualified or qualified by experience

•A retired or semi-retired finance professional

•A portfolio accountant or bookkeeper

•Someone who enjoys keeping their skills sharp through meaningful voluntary work

You should be comfortable with:

•VAT returns

•Spreadsheets and basic financial reporting

•Working accurately and methodically

•Communicating clearly and reliably

Previous charity experience is welcome but not essential.
